How to Apply Numeric Data Format

I created a numeric data format ($###,###,###.##), but I can't figure out how to apply the format!  I tried by creating a custom field on the form and a custom contact field.  Any thoughts?

Hi Amber, You would probably need to either create a new field that uses that format or update an existing field to that format.  Not a field on a form but a system field. Thanks, Lauren

I'm not getting any errors back from SFDC. The "waitlist" value is a in the list of campaign member statuses on the event I've been testing it on so it's not that.
